L’incoronazione di Poppea (The Coronation of Poppea) is a salacious tale of forbidden love, ambition, and betrayal. The Roman emperor Nero schemes to put away his wife in order to marry his mistress Poppea, who lusts more for power than for her lover.

Composed by Claudio Monteverdi, Poppea is one of the earliest operas. It helped to define the emerging genre of opera with compelling characters and emotionally wrought arias.

The Purchase Opera has won multiple first-place awards from the prestigious National Opera Association, beginning in 2004 through the 2010–12 award for Confession (Dominick Argento Chamber Opera Competition), the 2012–13 award for Die Fledermaus (Division II: Opera Production Competition), and the 2014 award for Hänsel und Gretel (Division I: Collegiate Opera Scenes Competition).
