I’ve got quite a mixed bag of virtual events this week. Enjoy as many as you can, but keep in mind that it’s also a great time of year to get out and experience your local neighborhood festivals!

Le Concert Spirituel: Fauré Requiem
Dedicated to the memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

French sacred music is one of the specialties of the ensemble founded in 1987 by Hervé Niquet that takes its name from an 18th-century Parisian concert-giving organization. Here, Fauré’s choral masterpiece is preceded by works by his local contemporaries.

Omar Apollo: Tiny Desk Concert

From September 15 through October 15, Tiny Desk is celebrating Latinx Heritage Month with an “El Tiny” takeover, featuring Jessie Reyez, Susana Baca, and more musicians from all corners of Latinidad. Omar Apollo kicks off the celebration, starting his concert with a full-band rendition of “En El Olvido.” Backed by Las Mariachis Lindas, he channels a childhood spent listening to Juan Gabriel into his performance of the Mexican corridor. As Apollo’s Tiny Desk comes to an end, he offers the audience a homework assignment for self-improvement, for putting the negative behind you, and making yourself available to participate in building community: “I want y’all to think about something,” he says. “I want you to go home, I want you to meditate and I want you to just burn the bridge.” He laughs. “I’m playing!” But as his and the band’s joyful energy attests, in the world of Omar Apollo, there’s only room for building each other up.

Best known for her Bach playing, Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt’s repertoire is much wider and includes the majority of the outputs of both Mozart and Chopin, as reflected in a program moving from Baroque through Classical to early Romantic.
