NPR presents Tiny Desk Concert: Randall Goosby
On-demand
Violinist Randall Goosby has arrived – and not just at the Tiny Desk. The young Juilliard graduate is racking up debuts with the world’s most important orchestras, he just pocketed the $25,000 Avery Fisher Career Grant and he can boast none other than violin legend Itzhak Perlman as his mentor. Not bad for 26 years old. We know Goosby’s star is on the rise, but the way his career got off the ground is worth mentioning. Goosby is an alum of the Detroit-based Sphinx Organization, which, for 25 years, has helped launch many prominent musicians of color, including composers Jessie Montgomery and Carlos Simon, pianist Lara Downes and opera stars Davóne Tines and Will Liverman. Goosby, at age 13, was the youngest to win the Sphinx Concerto Competition. Sphinx was also where he first performed neglected music by Black composers. “With each passing day,” Goosby told NPR last year, “you can almost see this wave of reckoning, and people starting to realize the magnitude of the body of work that we’ve not paid attention to.” Randall Goosby, violin and Zhu Wang, piano

The Elbphilharmonie Hamburg presents
Opening Night: Mahler’s Second Symphony (“Resurrection”)
On-demand
The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra and its chief conductor Alan Gilbert open the 2022/23 season with Gustav Mahler’s magnificent Second Symphony. “Rise again, yes, rise again thou wilt!” With spine-tingling optimism, the chorus at the end of Gustav Mahler’s Second Symphony highlights the work’s religiously and philosophically motivated core message. Performances of Mahler’s epic “Resurrection” Symphony are always an impressive event – and that not only in Hamburg, where the composer found inspiration in St. Michel Church for the choral finale.

Lincoln Center in partnership with Buglisi Dance Theatre presents
9/11 Performance Ritual for Peace – Table of Silence Project
Live stream
Sunday, September 11, 8:10am
Lincoln Center in partnership with Buglisi Dance Theatre honors the 21st year since the events of 9/11, and the current crises that face humanity today, with a live-streamed performance of the Table of Silence Project 9/11, an annual free public performance ritual for peace conceived and choreographed in 2011 by Jacqulyn Buglisi, Artistic Director of Buglisi Dance Theatre.
The live performance takes place in New York City at Lincoln Center. The company will perform the original large-scale version of the work, featuring more than 100+ dancers slowly ascending onto Josie Robertson Plaza to the sound of a conch shell’s call to action. Moving to the plaintive strains of the flute, the heartbeat of bass drums, trumpet, bells, and the cries of a chorus, the dancers form patterns of concentric circles around the iconic Revson Fountain to create an ancient Peace Labyrinth.

Unfortunately, however, it will be its last. One of the supreme ensembles of the world, its members have announced that the completion of their 2022-23 season will mark the end of their more than 30-year run.
