I’ve started watching the Newport Folk Festival and plan to savor more of it. I highly recommend checking it out. And after that? Venture out, or stay in – there are arts experiences of all kinds to enjoy this week.

Renowned music festival globalFEST joins forces with beloved NYC nightclubs Barbès and Drom in celebration of their milestone anniversaries (respectively 20, 20 and 15 years) for this mega event of musical discovery, featuring powerful artists with unique voices hailing from across the globe. Scheduled performers include soulful subversive folk-art heroes, DakhaBrakha (Ukraine); Amal Murkus & The Firas Zreik Quintet (Palestine/USA); DC’s premier Go-Go band, Rare Essence (Washington, DC), celebrating its 45th anniversary; psychedelic tropical futurists Combo Chimbita (New York/Colombia); Americana’s rising star, Amythyst Kiah (Tennessee); and Ahmad Fanoos and The Heart of Afghanistan Project (Afghanistan/USA), performing ghazals and popular songs. The evening culminates with a late-night Global Silent Disco as a celebration of musical freedom and a danceable vision of peace.

Dia Beacon presents
Sam Gilliam
Through July 31
Dia Art Foundation presents an exhibition of Sam Gilliam’s early work from the 1960s and 1970s at Dia Beacon in Beacon, New York. Installed alongside Dia’s permanent collection, this presentation situates Gilliam’s practice in dialogue with that of his Minimal and Postminimal peers, such as Robert Morris and Anne Truitt, who, like Gilliam, considered painting in an expanded form. One of the most important figures in American abstract art, he emerged from the Washington, DC, cultural scene in the 1960s alongside Truitt. Setting himself apart stylistically from Washington Color School painters, with whom he is often associated, the artist incorporated a beveled edge and experimented with suspension as two distinct methods of working with canvas. Free admission on the last Sunday of each month for Hudson Valley residents.

Carnegie Hall presents
NYO2 in Miami
Webcast Thursday, August 4, 2pm
This summer, tour performances by Carnegie Hall’s three acclaimed national youth ensembles-the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA), NYO2, and NYO Jazz will be broadcast and webcast to audiences around the globe, extending their music making to a wide international audience.
Kicking off the series of webcasts, Mei-Ann Chen leads NYO2 – an inspiring orchestra featuring outstanding musicians, ages 14-17 – at Miami Beach’s New World Center. The concert will be available to watch on medici.tv following the ensemble’s performance in Miami Beach. The program includes Jessie Montgomery’s Soul Force, Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, and Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, with pianist Aaron Diehl joining as guest soloist. NYO2 is joined on stage by Fellows from the New World Symphony, who also serve as coaches during the orchestra’s summer training residency.
