Culture Picks: November 18

Wishing everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving! Here are some things I’ve been thankful for these past several months, including percussion and libraries. There will be no blog post on Thanksgiving Day, but I hope these events will keep you entertained, inspired, and uplifted until we see you in December!

Our annual Founder’s Day concert honoring Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge offers something remarkable: a collaboration between the fearless Third Coast Percussion, electronic music producer/composer Jlin, and Movement Art Is in a composed evening featuring dance and music by Glass, Jlin, and Tyondai Braxton. With the experience shaped remotely during the pandemic, this natural marriage of dance and percussion delivers a shining example of flourishing creativity in the face of daunting circumstances. Paired with this performance is a new work composed for Third Coast Percussion by Gemma Peacocke, The threshold we cross with closed eyes.

The Society is pleased to present these three celebrated musicians in their second PCMS appearance as a trio, performing a pair of masterworks by Schumann and Beethoven’s lyrical Trio in E-flat Major—an arrangement of the Op. 20 Septet that is regarded as one of Beethoven’s greatest early chamber works. Livestreams are pay what you wish (no tickets required) and are broadcast in real-time. The video will remain available for 72 hours after each performance, subject to the approval of the artists.

It creates a network of storytelling enthusiasts bonded together in spirit. This year many of the events will be online – expanding the possibilities for both performers and audiences. This event, sponsored by the Rye Free Reading Room, is one of them.

The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center presents
Musical Heritage: Dorothy DeLay

Violinist Kristin Lee fondly remembers her teacher and legendary violin pedagogue, Dorothy DeLay, in this special program. Joining the panel are distinguished guests and former DeLay students and colleagues, Itzhak Perlman, Toby Perlman, Cho-Liang Lin, and Sandra Rivers, as they pay tribute to this great artist who mentored generations of musicians. The presentation includes rarely seen photos and videos. A Q & A with the virtual audience will follow the presentation.
